Santorini’s first vegan boutique hotel now open
The MOD Santorini vegan boutique hotel has opened on the Greek island of Santorini. The family-run hotel, originally built in the late 1970s, had been closed for more than a decade before the owners passed it on to their son, Anargyros (Argiris) Fousteris. He and his partner, Christina Boutrou, transform the space into a completely renovated vegan hotel for adults only.
With the first stage of the renovations completed, the hotel currently offers four suites on the first level of the space. When full construction is complete, MOD will offer 12 private suites on three levels. All rooms are spacious with their own unique design and private balconies, with two of the suites featuring a wraparound outdoor Jacuzzi on the balcony overlooking the Aegean Sea.
The hotel furnishings and materials, including suite bedding and toiletries, have been selected to ensure that they are not only luxurious, but also vegan, cruelty-free and sustainable. The bedroom mattresses are made with natural coconut fibers and the linens and towels are locally made with 100% cotton.
A vegan hotel with all the amenities
MOD has a fully vegan kitchen with free breakfast included with every stay. The free breakfast menu includes chickpea flour omelets, homemade jam with fresh bread, seasonal fruits, and freshly squeezed orange juice, and is delivered to rooms each morning. The expanded room service menu offers breakfast items such as chocolate and hazelnut pancakes, mixed berry waffles and spanakopita (a traditional Greek spinach phyllo dough), as well as squeezed juices. cold, smoothies and lattes. The lunch and dinner menus feature dishes such as vegan burgers, Buddha quinoa bowls, and falafel wraps, as well as wine and cocktails.
The hotel also offers a variety of activities, including private picnics with sparkling wine and homemade pizzas or a mezze board for two, as well as local vegan food and wine tours, guided yoga classes and visits to traditional villages. As one of the most popular Greek islands, Santorini is destined to be explored with its iconic whitewashed buildings, sheer cliffs, and tangerine sunsets. For its first special month, MOD Santorini is offering up to 50% off bookings in October.
Make the hotel completely vegan
Creating a fully vegan hotel was an easy decision for Fousteris and Boutrou. “When [I met] Argiris during my summer vacation in 2018, he had already planned to renovate the hotel and his dream was and still is to create something that represents the tradition and the heart of his family hotel, ”Boutrou told VegNews. When Boutrou moved to Santorini from her native island of Australia in 2019, she went fully vegan. And when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the couple found themselves cooking more vegan meals at home and growing more passionate about the vegan lifestyle.
The couple also knew that traveling as a vegan can be difficult with limited choices in destination islands such as Santorini. “It was clear to us… that we had to use our space to meet the needs of our people and create a fully vegan hotel,” Boutrou said. “If I had to cook breakfast, there was no way I would handle animal products. It was a clear path for us and we are proud to have taken this step.
Although Boutrou has repeatedly told friends and family that the concept of a vegan hotel will not work and that they will receive complaints if eggs and bacon are not on the breakfast menu, the couple thought it was the only solution. . “There was no way to convince us any other way,” said Boutrou. “It’s time for the hospitality industry to change [and] we are proud to lead the way for this on our island, Santorini. ”
MOD Santorini is the first vegan hotel on the island of Santorini, but it is not the first in Greece. Last year, the Koukoumi Hotel opened in the village of Ano Mera on the island of Mykonos. The all-inclusive retreat offers suites equipped with vegan decor; a spa with wellness treatments using vegan and cruelty-free products; a well-equipped gym where coaches offer outdoor fitness classes; and a vegan restaurant offering a buffet breakfast and Greek-inspired dishes.
