YPSILANTI, MI – A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s serves “healthy” soul food, said owner Victor “Biggie” Allen-Swanson.

A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s, 1004 West Michigan Ave., in Ypsilanti, focuses on fried chicken, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese, as well as catfish, candied yams, short ribs, and more. traditional soul.

“I love to serve good food to people,” Allen-Swanson said. “I do this because I like it. And I’m making money, finally.

While most soul food is often considered “unhealthy,” Allen-Swanson said, his restaurant serves more “healthy” versions by not including meat in all dishes.

“We sell food that is healthy for the soul,” he said, adding that he was also working on a salad menu. “It’s a new day and a new age.”

Highlights of the menu include a catfish dinner, a short rib dinner, and several varieties of chicken dinners. Each dinner comes with two sides and a piece of cornbread.

Accompaniments include baked beans, coleslaw, fried corn, macaroni and cheese, and a potato salad.

Its rib tips are ‘top of the line,’ Allen-Swanson said

“They melt in your mouth and melt in your hand,” he said.
