Hall on Washington reopens as Backside at Whiskey Row in Louisville

A downtown restaurant that closed last year is reopening under a new name.

The restaurant known as The Hall on Washington, 108 W. Washington St., will reopen as the Backside at Whiskey Row as soon as it has sufficient staff.

The Hall on Washington and its sister restaurant, Sidebar at Whiskey Row, both closed in March 2020, but Sidebar was able to reopen in May of this year at 129 N. Second Street.

Now, general manager Lissa Ramos is hoping the refreshed Backside restaurant at Whiskey Row can accommodate customers when the 98-seat Sidebar becomes too full.

“Backside will have bourbons like Sidebar, but with a more focus on tequila,” she said. “We also play a bit in the horse racing theme with the name and some menu items. Otherwise, nothing really changes in the decor.”

While The Hall on Washington served German-inspired cuisine, Backside will serve simple pub fare like fried chicken, grilled chicken, and smash burgers.

“We are looking at training bartenders to run the kitchen and consolidate the menu,” Ramos said. “We would love to be open right now, but until we have a food presence we are stuck. As a restaurant we set our own hours and change as needed, we have emergency menus. We determine our own success at this point. ”

The rear measures approximately 3,400 square feet with a long bar across the main wall. Ramos said appetizers would cost between $ 5 and $ 16, sandwiches between $ 13 and $ 16, and cocktails between $ 4 and $ 20.

“I want to be open for the basketball season,” Ramos said. “Tourism is picking up. We believe that in 2022 we will start to see some normalcy.”

Sidebar and Backside will share the same hours. The restaurants will be open Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from noon to 9:30 p.m. and whenever there is a basketball game or a concert.
