1. Trattoria Stefano

This unpretentious place for rustic Italian cuisine is one of Wisconsin’s best restaurants. It’s the kind of cohesive rock star place where you’re pretty much guaranteed a good meal. Try the chicken stuffed with truffle butter under the skin, the osso buco with Strauss veal shank and saffron risotto, or the casarecce pasta topped with an Italian sausage / ground beef stew (a sauce recipe that comes from the grandmother of the owner). 2. Tavern on Woodlake

Il Ritrovo gets a bit more chic with its toppings, and one of my favorites is Boscaiola, with mozzarella, truffle cheese, roast, pancetta, and roasted mushrooms. Housed in a 130-year-old brick farmhouse, The Blind Horse is a new American joint with flavors inspired by Napa Valley. Starters range from Blind Horse burger to walleye, from pork osso buco to homemade pasta with “Napa” stew (with beef tenderloin and Italian sausage).
